Mesh Banner vs. Vinyl Banner

For any company, constructing brand awareness is absolutely vital when building your reputation. But with all the different styles of advertising and printing available, how do you cut out the noise and decide what’s right for you? Outdoor advertising is a key platform utilised nationwide to increase brand visibility and popularity. In the last two decades, technology for outdoor advertising has increased, allowing companies to maximise its benefits. Outdoor advertising provides a large platform for any company to exhibit their creativity, all the while displaying their brand message in large print. Outdoor advertising can also be embraced within a company’s transformational advertising campaign – inserting a message or an image about a product or service into the mind of a potential customer.

Two distinctive choices

Once a company sets their sights on developing an outdoor advertising campaign, a key factor they must consider is the type of banner they wish to employ. Two distinctive banners you can choose between are mesh and vinyl. There are many factors to take into account when deciding on what style of banner you wish to use such as, budget, location and the overall purpose behind your message. It’s important to consider the colour of the graphics, readability of your slogan and how durable each material is. It’s furthermore vital to bear in mind the length of time your banner will be in place, and its location. Once you make these choices, narrowing down between your options becomes much simpler. Below are some key differences between mesh and vinyl banners.

Mesh banners

Mesh banners are constructed using a woven polyester material with small air holes allowing for breathability as well as high quality digital printing. Because of this interlaced fabric, air actually passes through the mesh weave allowing for stability, making mesh banners ideal for outdoor locations, even on windy days. Mesh banners are a common sight on areas such as construction sites, fencing and scaffolding and can be utilised for a long time due to their durability. It’s also important to remember that vinyl is more likely to tear compared to mesh and so mesh provides a longer shelf life. Typically, mesh banners are made up of 70% vinyl and 30% mesh, making them lightweight and durable. If they are well maintained they should outlast the ability of a vinyl banner. Although constructing a vinyl banner can be more cost effective, vinyl alone is more likely to be torn or damaged in harsher weather conditions.

Vinyl banners

Vinyl banners are a more cost effective option for high quality digital printing and tend to be more common than mesh. Vinyl banners are composed of a heavyweight PVC vinyl material, available in gloss and matte finishes and can be printed in less time. A key difference with vinyl is that unlike with mesh, they can be double sided and utilised for a variety of requirements. They can often be found over high traffic locations, in shopping malls or around educational facilities. Although ideal for sharp colours and graphics, they tend to be more appropriate for shorter advertising campaigns and projects. A downside to vinyl is the thickness of the material means the banner has no airflow properties and is therefore not suited to areas with strong winds, such as on scaffolding. Vinyl also tends to tear or damage easily and can wrinkle over time. Therefore, for outdoor areas such as construction sites, vinyl banners tend not to be the banner of choice due to their limited durability.

Which one will you choose?

Choosing between a mesh or a vinyl banner comes down to your budget, location and the length of time your banner will be in place. While vinyl banners can be more cost effective, come in matte or gloss and can be double sided, they tend not to be as durable as mesh and are more susceptible to damage or tearing. Vinyl banners tend to be more suited to shorter advertising campaigns. Mesh banners, on the other hand, are more durable and designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. If a long campaign is your goal, the benefits of a mesh banner will outweigh costs.
